Charity

We are aware of Father McGivney’s goodness and his sanctity, and so we are not surprised that the organization he founded resembles the God he loved so deeply. Nothing is more basic to the life of the Church than the truth that God is love, the love we are called to share with one another. What better way to show our love for God than to care for those less fortunate than ourselves.

The first principle of the Knights of Columbus is Charity, for God is love. Because we are the beneficiaries of his love, we are bound together in a unity of love, in a common brotherhood that overflows with love for our families, for the wider Church, and for the world, especially for the poor, the vulnerable and the war-torn. From his place in eternity, Father McGivney continues to teach us how to live the principles of this Order, how to embrace God’s love by living charity, unity and fraternity.

Faith in God's love encompasses the call and the obligation to respond with sincere love to divine charity. The first commandment enjoins us to love God above everything and all creatures for him and because of him.
